ALLEN RAINE 2014 SHORT STORY COMPETITION WINNERS

WINNERS OF SEVENTH ALLEN RAINE SHORT STORY COMPETITION
ANNOUNCED

The 2014 winners of the Allen Raine short story competition were announced on Friday at a prize-giving event in Newcastle Emlyn.

In the Welsh language category, Mari Gwilym from Caernarfon took the £200
first prize, donated by Cylch Emlyn, and Sian Teifi, also from Caernarfon,
came second. She received books from category sponsor, publishers Gwasg
Gomer.

The English language category was won by Jan Newton from Builth Wells.
She, too, received a cheque for £200 from Cylch Emlyn.
Second placed was Jo Mazelis from Swansea who will receive books from sponsor, Parthian Books.

The judges of the seventh annual competition were Sally Roberts Jones, Allen Raine Celebration Society president, and Professor Jane Aaron. Sally was on hand to present the prizes.

The short story competition was launched in 2008 to mark the centenary of the death of Allen Raine, Newcastle Emlyn’s internationally best-selling author who is buried in St. Michael’s Church, Penbryn.

Allen Raine Celebration Society chairman, David Heal, said: “From modest beginnings in 2008, interest in the society and the competition has grown to such an extent that more than 60 writers submitted stories this year. This means more than 300 stories have been submitted in seven years. We are delighted by the support and interest we have received and by the quality of
the work”.

The 2015 competition and the society’s new website will be launched early
next year.
